The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has firmly denied rumours of a feud between himself and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, following recent reports suggesting tension over a chieftaincy title.
In a statement issued on Thursday by his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, the Alaafin described the claims as baseless and misleading.
The statement reads; “The Alaafin’s focus remains on the welfare, culture, and development of his people, not on rivalry with any traditional ruler.”
“The Alaafin does not need to engage in any battle for supremacy with any Oba, whether in Yorubaland or elsewhere. He is a steadfast custodian of Yoruba culture and tradition, always mindful of the safety and welfare of his subjects.”
“Alaafin’s role is that of a traditional authority committed to protecting and promoting Yoruba values. His administration will remain focused on strengthening the cultural legacy of the throne.”
The clarification comes amid social media speculation linking the Alaafin’s displeasure to the Ooni’s recent conferment of the chieftaincy title “Okanlomo of Oduwa” on Ibadan-based businessman, Chief Dotun Sanusi. The move sparked tensions as Alaafin issued a 48-hour ultimatum demanding the title be revoked.
However, the palace’s statement makes it clear that no such ultimatum was issued, and that the Alaafin remains committed to fostering peace and unity among Yoruba traditional institutions.
