Nigerian singer, Olawale Olofooro, popularly known as Brymo, has sparked debate after disagreeing with renowned Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, over the interpretation of Yoruba religion, especially the claim that Èṣù should not be compared to Satan.

Speaking during a recent radio programme, Brymo argued that Èṣù and Satan are essentially the same.

According to him, Satan is not necessarily a liar but a messenger sent to test human character and behavior.

He said; “Èṣù is the devil. And let me tell you the truth, the devil does not lie. Human beings lie. Human beings are deceptive.”

Brymo added that both Islamic and Yoruba traditions describe Satan and Èṣù as messengers, insisting that the similarities between the two are too obvious to ignore.

He further noted that people often praise God when things go well but are quick to blame the devil or Èṣù whenever things go wrong.
