Facebook Marketplace is celebrating its 10th anniversary, highlighting how Nigerians use it to discover products, sell items and connect with buyers and sellers in their communities. From electronics and clothing to furniture and home improvement essentials, Marketplace brings a wide range of products together in one place.
More than 835,000 listings are placed on Facebook Marketplace in Nigeria every month. Electronics account for more than 180,000 monthly listings, while home items and fashion each record over 110,000 listings. Home improvement accounts for more than 40,000 listings each month. These figures show the variety of items people offer on Facebook Marketplace, giving buyers options to explore and sellers opportunities to reach people interested in their products.
Marketplace was built because people were already buying and selling items on Facebook, in Groups. It gave that activity a dedicated home, making it simpler to find what you were looking for and connect with potential buyers and sellers. Ten years later, that purpose remains central to the experience.
“People come to Facebook to connect over the things that matter to them, and buying and selling is part of that everyday activity. We built Marketplace because people were already trading in Facebook Groups, and we wanted to give that a dedicated home where it’s simpler to discover products and connect with buyers and sellers. And that’s the story of Facebook: we see what people are already doing, and then make it easier. As we celebrate 10 years, we’re recognising the people and communities who make Marketplace useful every day. We want buying and selling to feel as safe as it is easy, which is why safety tools are built in, and why we keep sharing the simple habits that help protect people ,” said Oluwasola Obagbemi, Head of Communications, Sub-Saharan Africa at Meta.
For buyers, Marketplace offers a way to search for specific items, compare available options and speak directly with sellers to ask questions about a product. For sellers, it provides a place to list items and connect with potential buyers. Whether someone is furnishing a room, browsing clothing or selling a used gadget, these exchanges begin with people discovering what others have to offer.
Safety is an important part of the experience. People should review seller profiles, other listings and available ratings before proceeding. For in-person exchanges, they should meet in a public, well-lit place during daylight and let someone they trust know their plans. Where possible, buyers should inspect items before paying, avoid payment links shared in chats and access payment services through official websites or apps. If something seems suspicious, stop the transaction and report the listing or person on Facebook.
As Marketplace celebrates 10 years, it continues to help Nigerians find what they need and connect with buyers for items they want to sell.
