Former Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, has died at the age of 82. He passed away on Sunday afternoon in a hospital in London, following an undisclosed illness.
The news was confirmed by his former spokesperson, Garba Shehu, in a statement shared via his official X handle (formerly Twitter).
“The family of the former president has announced the passing of Muhammadu Buhari this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him into Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin,” Shehu wrote.
Muhammadu Buhari was a prominent Nigerian statesman and retired major general. Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, he rose to national prominence as a military leader.
He first led Nigeria as a military Head of State from 1983 to 1985 after taking power in a coup. His regime was known for its anti-corruption stance and strict discipline but was criticized for its authoritarian style.
After several attempts at returning to power through democratic means, Buhari was elected President in 2015 under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC), defeating incumbent Goodluck Jonathan. His election marked Nigeria’s first peaceful transition of power between political parties.
Buhari served two terms as President, leaving office in 2023. His presidency was marked by a strong anti-corruption campaign, efforts to combat Boko Haram insurgency, and controversial economic policies that drew both praise and criticism.
He is survived by his wife, Aisha Buhari, and their children.
