As Lagos State prepares for its local government elections scheduled for Saturday, July 12, 2025, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has called on all eligible voters to participate actively in the democratic process.
In a statement released ahead of the polls, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of the local government as the closest tier of government to the people. He noted that the grassroots level plays a critical role in service delivery and community development.
“I call on all eligible voters across the state to come out in large numbers to participate in the exercise,” the Governor said. “This election offers Lagosians an opportunity to shape the leadership of their local councils by voting for Chairmen and Councilors who will represent their interests.”
Describing the election as both a constitutional duty and a civic right, Sanwo-Olu urged voters to conduct themselves peacefully and responsibly.
“To ensure a safe, orderly, and credible election, I have directed security agencies to be strategically deployed across all polling units and communities,” he stated. “Law enforcement officers will be on ground to protect voters, electoral officials, and election materials.”
The Governor also expressed confidence in the readiness of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), assuring citizens of a smooth and transparent electoral process.
“I urge all political stakeholders, party agents, and candidates to conduct themselves with decorum and uphold the principles of peace, fairness, and respect for the rule of law throughout the election,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu made a special appeal to the youth, encouraging them to shun violence and act as ambassadors of peace and democracy.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to democratic values, he concluded: “Lagos will continue to set the pace in democratic development. Let us show the world once again that Lagos stands for peace, progress, and participatory governance.”
