The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has praised the recent visit of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, describing it as both symbolic and impactful in reaffirming her strong ties to Lagos and dedication to national development.
Obasa made the remarks during an engagement session hosted by the First Lady, which brought together traditional rulers, religious leaders, and key political stakeholders in Lagos State. He emphasized that the visit was a clear demonstration of Senator Tinubu’s unwavering connection to the state and her active role in advancing its welfare.
“It’s wonderful to welcome her back to Lagos. She has always been a mother to us — first as the First Lady of Lagos State and now as the First Lady of the Federation,” Obasa stated. “Her visit was well-coordinated and meaningful, and it sends a strong signal that her commitment to Lagos remains steadfast.”
The Speaker commended Senator Tinubu’s national development agenda, especially her emphasis on food security, poverty alleviation, and collaborative engagement with traditional institutions. According to him, these priorities are well-aligned with both constitutional mandates and the immediate needs of the grassroots.
He also highlighted the Lagos Assembly’s legislative strides in safeguarding children’s rights — with particular attention to the girl-child — citing laws already in place to address issues such as rape, abuse, and school safety.
Importantly, Obasa threw his weight behind a major idea discussed during the First Lady’s visit: the creation of an institution focused on developing leadership skills among young girls.
“One of the key takeaways from her visit was the proposal to institutionalize leadership training for the girl-child — and I fully support it,” he said. “It’s not enough to legislate; we must intentionally groom our young girls to become leaders. This is a priority for us, and we will look into how it can be integrated into our development policies.”
His endorsement gives a boost to the growing national push for the empowerment of the next generation of female leaders in Nigeria.
