Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe has dismissed media reports claiming he promised to fix Nigeria’s power grid within three months, describing the reports as inaccurate and misleading.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Adeola A. Adelabu, the Minister-designate clarified that during his Senate screening on May 6, 2026, he never made such a commitment. Instead, Tegbe explained that timelines for reforms in the power sector are still being developed and would depend on detailed diagnostics and stakeholder consultations.
According to the statement, Tegbe assured lawmakers that initial efforts to stabilize the national grid would begin within his first 100 days in office, while broader structural reforms including improvements in sector credibility, gas supply, and metering could take up to a year to achieve.
He emphasized that his focus would be on stabilizing the grid, modernizing infrastructure, improving commercial frameworks, and enforcing accountability across the electricity value chain. Tegbe also pledged that tariff reforms under his leadership would protect vulnerable Nigerians while ensuring sustainability and investor confidence in the sector.
“My promise to this chamber and to Nigeria is that Nigerians will see visible improvement in the sector,” he stated during the screening.
The statement further noted that the Minister-designate remains committed to transparency, disciplined execution, and measurable progress in tackling Nigeria’s longstanding power challenges, while also encouraging constructive engagement with the media to ensure accurate public understanding of reforms in the sector.
