The Light Of Excellence: Anambra Wins More National Laurels In Education

By Christian ABURIME

There must be something magical in Anambra State’s moniker as ‘The Light of the Nation’ that keeps inspiring its people to new waves of excellence. This is especially so in the area of education. When Irish literary icon William Butler Yeats said that “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire”, Anambra seems to be one society under Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, that literally caught the fire and has never stopped lighting up Nigeria with it!

Again, the state has proved that there is no limit to possibilities when commitment meets capacity, and vision meets execution. At the 2026 President’s Teachers’ and Schools’ Excellence Awards recently held in Abuja, Anambra turned up transforming the ceremony into a celebration of its educational renaissance. It captured nine out of eighteen national honours and emerged as the undisputed champion across the nation’s educational spectrum.

This is no ordinary accomplishment. It is an undeniable statement written in gold across the pages of educational excellence, a proof of the power of deliberate investment in human capital and institutional development being made by the administration of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo.

The significance of this moment is definitely inspiring. Nine awards. Eight categories won outright. One prestigious runners-up position was secured. Half of all the honours presented at the nation’s highest educational accolades now bear the stamp of Anambra excellence. The mathematics of victory speaks clearly, yet the import runs far deeper than numbers.

Across the entire educational ecosystem, from primary foundations to secondary horizons, the state’s institutions have proven their worth. In Public Primary School Administration, in Private Junior Secondary instruction, across both sectors and all levels, Anambra has demonstrated a rare consistency. It is the signature of systemic excellence under the Soludo administration

Yet, behind every award stands a human exemplar whose dedication has been recognised. Mrs. Gloria Nkolika Odionu of Awada Primary School 4, Obosi, carried home the crown as Overall Best Public Primary School Administrator in Nigeria. Her feat, accompanied by a Jetour black SUV, symbolises the tangible value the nation places on educational leadership.

Mrs. Agatha Chika Ofojindu of Urban Boys Secondary School, Onitsha, claimed the title of Best Public Junior Secondary School Administrator in Nigeria, her excellence rewarded with a tricycle as a practical instrument of mobility and possibility. Beyond these individual laurels, laptops, deep freezers, and equipment were distributed across the winning categories, each item representing resources that will return to schools to multiply learning opportunities.

What makes this accomplishment particularly remarkable is its breadth. The success spans public and private institutions alike, recognising that true educational advancement requires partnership across sectors. The feat cuts across teachers, school administrators, and entire schools, suggesting that the foundation laid under the current administration of Soludo has been deep enough to support diverse manifestations of excellence.

There lies the hallmark of sustainable investment: when the infrastructure of education becomes strong enough that excellence emerges organically from multiple sources rather than being forced from a single point of origin.

For any governing administration, education represents perhaps the most consequential arena of public trust. The classroom is where futures are shaped, where economic destiny is formed, and where civic values take root. Therefore, to invest wisely in education, as Governor Soludo has done through quality teachers recruitment, infrastructure facilitation, and free education, is to invest in the very soul of a society’s tomorrow.

Even more, the recognition that Anambra has received suggests a governance philosophy that understands this truth, that policies must translate into outcomes, that resources must become results, and that the measure of leadership is found in achievements witnessed by independent national assessment.

More importantly, the achievement sends a message to the children of Ndi Anambra themselves: that they are worthy of investment, that their teachers deserve recognition, and that their communities believe in their potential enough to build systems that allow excellence to flourish.

Of course, the celebration of the nine awards does not mark a destination but rather serves as validation of a journey well in progress. The challenge now becomes one of consolidation, of ensuring that the momentum generated translates into sustained progress, that the recognition earned fuels continued innovation, and that the students yet to come benefit from systems designed for long-term flourishing.

Anambra is rising. The Solution is working here. The light of learning keeps burning brightly. And in that brightness, the rest of Nigeria can see what is possible when education becomes not only a priority, but a promise kept.
