Contionus growth, innovation, expansion and strategic repositioning are the defining features of Nigeria’s financial giant, Zenith Bank PLC. The recent appointment of Engr. Mustafa Bello, former Minister of Commerce and longest-serving Non-Executive Director of Zenith Bank Plc as the new Chairman of the Bank falls with the ambit of Zenith Bank’s repositioning strategy. Engr. Bello came onboard following the retirement of Jim Ovia, the bank’s founding Chairman who held sway for 12 years.
Zenith Bank has maintained an unbroken momentum of growth and expansion in the last two years following the appointment of
Dame Adaora Umeoji as its first female GMD/CEO. Under her, the Bank has continued to record stronger performance, bolstered investor confidence,and bold strategic direction. For example, Zenith Bank recorded share price surge, rising from ₦64 to over ₦100, thus maintaining its position as one of Nigeria’s most profitable banks.
Its gross earnings hit ₦2.5 Trillion In H1 2025, delivering a stunning 2025 half year financial results.
At its 35th Annual General Meeting( AGM) recently held in Lagos, the Bank’s shareholders approved the proposed final dividend payment of ₦8.75 per share, bringing the total dividend for the 2025 financial year to ₦10.00 per share, with a total value of ₦410.69 billion.
The shareholders commended the Bank’s performance, particularly its ability to sustain strong profitability, having become the first and only Nigerian bank to record Profit Before Tax (PBT) and Profit After Tax (PAT) above the ₦1 trillion mark in two consecutive years. The Bank posted a Profit Before Tax of ₦1.26 trillion and a Profit After Tax of ₦1.04 trillion for the 2025 financial year, reflecting the strength of its core banking operations and resilience in an evolving macroeconomic environment.
Zenith Bank’s performance in the 2025 financial year remained underpinned by strong earnings growth and balance sheet expansion. Gross earnings rose by approximately 6% to ₦4.19 trillion, driven by a significant increase in interest income. Customer deposits grew by about 9%, while total assets expanded by approximately 11%, supported by sustained customer confidence and effective liquidity management. Asset quality also improved, with the non-performing loan ratio moderating to 3.82%, reflecting prudent risk management.
The Bank continues to receive recognition from reputable international and domestic institutions for its performance, corporate governance standards, and market position within the Nigerian banking industry.
Zenith Bank Plc operates an extensive network of over 500 branches and business offices across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Nigeria.
Recent domestic expansion drives have seen the Bank commission new branches in strategic locations, such as a fifth branch in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State caipital and Numan branch in Adamawa State.The Bank has also been expanding its global footprint. Recently, it opened a new branch in Manchester, United Kingdom complementing its existing UK operations and serving as a strategic hub for corporate banking, trade finance, and diaspora flows.
It’s strategic African expansion moves have seen Zenith Bank driving a major Francophone African expansion with entry into Côte d’Ivoire and preparations to establish a presence in Cameroon.
In terms of innovations, Zenith Bank has embarked on a strategic innovations by heavily upgrading its core IT infrastructure and migrating to decentralized blockchain payment networks. These moves support its pan-African expansion, the launch of an AI-powered trade portal, and major tech startup funding initiatives.
The Bank has achieved a major overhaul of its IT infrastructure, boosting transaction processing speeds and strengthening security against digital fraud.
It partnered with Zone to integrate blockchain technology for faster, transparent, and immediate transaction settlements and deployed the ZIVA virtual assistant to handle millions of customer queries in real-time across digital platforms like WhatsApp.
Zenith has also launched ZenPay (a fintech subsidiary) which partnered with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to develop a digital portal aimed at boosting intra-African trade and cross-border, in line with its pan-African banking initiative.
Adaora Umeoji assumed office in June 2024 as the first female CEO in the bank’s history, succeeding industry titan Jim Ovia.
