Joe Igbokwe, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has condemned the impeachment process initiated against Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, by members of the State House of Assembly.
Igbokwe, who expressed strong opposition to the move, called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently intervene in the political crisis rocking the oil-rich state.
“I will not support the impeachment of Governor Fubara for any reason whatsoever,” he said.
“PBAT should intervene to halt these distractions in the oil-rich state. Rivers State has been in the news for the wrong reasons.”
Meanwhile, members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.
At a plenary session held on Thursday and presided over by the Speaker, Martins Amaewhule, the Majority Leader, Major Jack, read a notice outlining allegations of gross misconduct against the governor.
The notice, endorsed by 26 lawmakers, accused Governor Fubara of actions allegedly in violation of the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution. Amaewhule disclosed that the notice would be served on the governor within seven days.
Similarly, during the same sitting, the Deputy Majority Leader, Linda Stewart, read a separate notice detailing allegations of gross misconduct against Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu.
