The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice has formally announced the discontinuation of the criminal charge against Dr. Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Fidelity Bank Plc, citing her lack of direct involvement in the alleged fraud case.
In a statement signed by Kamarudeen Ogundele, Special Assistant to the President on Communication and Publicity in the Office of the AGF, the Attorney General emphasized that the decision reflects the federal government’s commitment to justice, fairness, and adherence to the rule of law.
According to the release, a detailed review of the case revealed that Dr. Onyeali-Ikpe was neither the account officer nor the Managing Director of Fidelity Bank at the time the account used in the alleged fraudulent scheme was opened. This informed the AGF’s decision to exercise his constitutional authority to enter a nolle prosequi a legal declaration to discontinue prosecution—on her behalf.
“This decision is guided strictly by the facts of the case and should not be misinterpreted as an exoneration of the institution involved,” the statement read. “The criminal charge against Fidelity Bank Plc remains active and is still before the court.”
The Attorney General reassured the public of his office’s dedication to ensuring that those found culpable will face the full weight of the law. He also urged members of the public to allow the judicial process to unfold without resorting to speculation or hasty conclusions.
“This action should be seen as part of a broader commitment to justice, not a shield for wrongdoing,” Ogundele added.
Dr. Onyeali-Ikpe’s removal from the case marks a significant development in the ongoing investigation into alleged financial misconduct involving the bank. Legal observers say the decision sets a precedent for scrutinizing corporate liability without hastily implicating individuals without direct ties to alleged wrongdoing.
