Nigeria’s digital transformation leader, Globacom, has called on Nigerians to strive for unity as a way of overcoming challenges in the nation.
Globacom gave the charge in a congratulatory message to Nigerians on the commemoration of the country’s return to democratic rule in 1999. June 12 was adopted as the official Democracy Day in honour of Chief MKO Abiola who was believed to have won the fairest and freest election in Nigeria on that date in 1993. The election was annulled and Chief Abiola later died in detention.
Globacom in a statement on Thursday, June 11th, 2020 urged Nigerians to come together irrespective of differences in tribe and tap into the power of diversity inherent in the country.
Globacom said; “June 12 is a watershed. It stands for a series of events which gave us new heroes of democracy in the early to the late 90s. We must remember that some of our fellow compatriots laid down their lives, making the ultimate sacrifice before the country arrived at the democracy that we have been enjoying for the past 21 years.”
The telecom company recalled that the heroes of Nigeria’s democracy should be remembered for shedding their blood to build a more cohesive, united and prosperous country. It said that for their labour to be fruitful, “we must ensure that the federating units of this great nation unite and work assiduously towards maintaining the peace and mutual co-existence that we have enjoyed since we returned to civil rule in 1999”.
Globacom stated that there could never be development in the absence of peace, adding that Nigeria is a nation of vibrant, diligent and hardworking people who make laudable footprints anywhere they find themselves across the globe.
The telecom company urged Nigerians to strive at all times to preserve the good image of the country wherever they go.
