Singer Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P and a former member of the defunct P-Square group, has made a U-turn after earlier questioning the value of speaking Nigerian languages.

In a new post on his X page, the singer declared his pride in his roots.

He wrote; “I’m a nobody, I repeat, a nobody! Without the culture, native language and pride of being a Nigerian. I’m 100% proudly Nigerian and 100% proudly Igbo.”

Mr P had earlier come under heavy criticism on social media after celebrating the fact that his children speak French fluently.

He had written: “Still in Paris! Watching my kids speak French so effortlessly makes me think… maybe it’s time to own a house here in Paris.”

Reacting to the criticism, he defended himself. He wrote: “Who has any Nigerian language really helped? If it pains you, go and hit your head on the wall. I’m a public figure, so what? You can call me names if you like. But did I ever complain that my children can’t speak my language? No.”

He added that people were getting angry over something that was not their concern.

Mr P also questioned why people were attacking him instead of criticizing Nigerian politicians who send their children abroad to study and live while paying little attention to promoting Nigerian languages and culture.

He concluded by saying: “Some of you are not ready to learn new things.”
