Popular Nollywood actor and filmmaker, Kunle Afod’s estranged wife, Desola Afod, has fired back at actress Wumi Toriola after the latter advised her to change her surname.
Wumi had urged Desola to drop the Afod surname and revert to her father’s name, following backlash over her criticism of theatre practitioners whom she accused of disrespecting her by addressing her by name.
In a video addressing the controversy, Wumi said Desola could adopt another name if she believed the Afod surname was attracting disrespect. She also faulted Desola for making generalised comments about theatre practitioners, insisting that such remarks were insulting to professionals in the industry.
Wumi further urged Desola to mention the specific individuals she had issues with rather than making statements that could be perceived as an attack on the entire theatre community.
She also recalled a previous disagreement involving one of her colleagues, claiming that she had refrained from speaking out at the time out of respect for Desola’s then-marriage to Kunle Afod.
Reacting to Wumi’s comments, Desola insisted that she would not change her surname, declaring that she would continue to be known as Desola Afod.
She said; “One thing remains unchanged: MY NAME IS STILL DESOLA AFOD, CELEB WIFE, TILL THE END OF TIME 100.”
Meanwhile, addressing the controversy surrounding her remarks about theatre practitioners, Desola issued a clarification, retracting her generalised statement and stressing that she did not intend to disrespect everyone in the industry.
She said; “Whatever statement I made generally concerning ‘Àwọn ọmọ Tíátíà’, I hereby retract and take it back. I don’t mean to generalise or refer to everyone in the industry. The few people that did me dirty know themselves.”
