What separates businesses that disappear after a few years from enterprises that remain relevant for generations?
This important question shaped the message of Time Out With Kate 4.0, the fourth edition of the annual entrepreneurship and business development conference, themed “Building Transgenerational Businesses 4.0.”

Convened by Mrs. Catherine Opeyemi Adesomoju, popularly known as Sister Kate, the conference reinforced the importance of responsible leadership, business sustainability, financial intelligence, and generational wealth creation.

Mrs. Adesomoju, an evangelist, entrepreneur, author, and MD/CEO of Spectrum Holdings, is a recipient of an Honorary Doctorate in Corporate Leadership and Entrepreneurship Management, a FIBAKM Fellow, and an alumna of Lagos Business School and Harvard Business School’s Owner/President Management Programme.

The conference challenged conventional ideas about business ownership, emphasizing that true ownership is demonstrated through accountability, discipline, continuous learning, and the courage to make difficult decisions.

Rather than focusing exclusively on financial gains, entrepreneurs were encouraged to build systems, develop people and establish values that can sustain their enterprises beyond their personal involvement.

Central to this approach are seven pillars of ownership: vision, focus, discipline, learning, courage, integrity and value.
The message extended beyond entrepreneurs to four important stakeholders: employers, employees, government and communities.

Employers have a responsibility to build sustainable institutions and create opportunities. Employees must embrace professional development and personal accountability. Government institutions must demonstrate responsible leadership and fulfil public commitments, while communities must promote shared responsibility and collective progress.

Building a Culture of Ownership for Future Generations

The long-term significance of Time Out With Kate lies in its continued emphasis on entrepreneurship education, business succession planning and leadership development.

As Nigeria seeks to strengthen its entrepreneurial ecosystem, annual platforms that encourage mentorship, knowledge sharing and institutional development can play an important role in preparing businesses for future challenges.

The conference highlighted the need to move beyond founder-dependent enterprises toward sustainable organizations built on strong governance, innovation, integrity and transferable systems.

Since its debut in 2023, Time Out With Kate has continued to encourage entrepreneurs to pursue purposeful leadership and long-term wealth creation.

Powered by His Presence Foundation, with sponsorship support from itel Energy, Oraimo and Spectrum Innovation Technologies Limited, the fourth edition reinforced the importance of business education and responsible entrepreneurship.

For Mrs. Adesomoju, building transgenerational businesses means recognizing that today’s leadership decisions can influence employees, families, communities and future generations.

The central message of Time Out With Kate 4.0 remains powerful: ownership is not merely about what individuals possess, but about the responsibility they accept, the value they create, and the legacy they leave behind.
