The long-standing political feud between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has officially come to an end.
This resolution came through the intervention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who successfully brokered peace between the two political figures, as well as members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
The development was confirmed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, via his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday, June 27, 2025.
Onanuga wrote; “Tinubu brokers Rivers peace talks.”
“President Bola Tinubu hosted a reconciliation meeting on Thursday night at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, bringing together all the figures in the Rivers State political crisis.”
“Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, Speaker Martins Amaewhule, and other Rivers State Assembly members attended the closed-door session.”
“On March 18, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency, suspending Governor Fubara, his deputy, and all the State House of Assembly members.”
For those who don’t know, the political conflict between Nyesom Wike and Siminalayi Fubara has been centered around a power struggle over the control and governance of Rivers State.
Nyesom Wike, the immediate past Governor of Rivers State and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has remained a highly influential figure in the state’s political landscape even after leaving office. He played a significant role in the emergence of Siminalayi Fubara as his successor in the 2023 elections, essentially handpicking him for the governorship under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform.
However, shortly after Fubara assumed office, cracks began to appear in their political relationship. Fubara began asserting his independence, making decisions that reportedly did not align with Wike’s expectations or preferences. This led to tensions and eventually escalated into a full-blown political battle.
